The US State Department expressed concerns over the last weekend’s escalation of the migrant crisis at the Belarus-Poland border, spokesperson Ned Price told the press in a conference in Washington DC, Monday.
On behalf of the United States, Price called on the Belarusian regime “to immediately halt its campaign of orchestrating and coercing irregular migrant flows across its borders into Europe” and strongly condemned the action.
The spokesman warned that more diplomatic pressure will follow if Belarus “refuses to respect its international obligations and commitments, undermines the peace and security of Europe and continues to repress and abuse people seeking nothing more than to live in freedom.”
He concluded by reiterating the country’s support to the EU allies and especially Poland currently facing the migrant crisis due to “Belarus’ unacceptable actions.”
Over the last weekend, according to reports, around 4,000 migrants were at the Polish border with Belarus, with thousands of other migrants in Belarus waiting to cross into Poland.
SOT, Ned Price, US State Department spokesman: “We are concerned with disturbing images and reports emanating from Belarus-Poland border this weekend. United States Strongly condemns the Lukashenko regime’s political exploitation and coercion of vulnerable people and the regime’s (inaudible) facilitation of irregular migration flows across its borders.
We call on the (Lukashenko) regime to immediately halt its campaign of orchestrating and coercing irregular migrant flows across its borders into Europe.
As long as the regime and Belarus refuses to respect its international obligations and commitments, undermines the peace and security of Europe and continues to repress and abuse people seeking nothing more than to live in freedom, we will continue to pressure Lukashenko and will not lessen our calls for accountability. Unites States will continue to stand by Poland and all of our partners in Europe who have been threatened by Belarus’ unacceptable actions.”
