Russia analyst Igor Danchenko pleaded not guilty to lying to the FBI about the 2016 Steele dossier, which featured rumours and allegations about former President Donald Trump, at a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

Danchenko, who was accompanied by his lawyer, left the courthouse without commenting to the journalists gathered outside the building.

The case against Danchenko is part of the FBI’s ongoing investigation into ties between Russia and former US President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign.

Danchenko has been accused of five counts of making false statements, with each charge carrying a potential five-year prison sentence.

During the hearing the judge set the date for the trial in April.
