United States State Department spokesperson Ned Price said US troops deployed to Eastern Europe amid tensions between Russia and Ukraine are ‘not permanent moves,’ adding they were in response to Russia, during a press conference in Washington DC on Wednesday.
“These are not permanent moves, they are precisely in response to the current security environment in light of this increasingly threatening behaviour by the Russian Federation,” said Price who added they were “deterrent and defensive measures.”
The United States and Russia have been negotiating a de-escalation of tensions amid a build-up of Russian military equipment and soldiers at the border with Ukraine amid fears of an imminent invasion.
Moscow has denied any intension to invade Ukraine but has demanded a ban on Ukraine entering NATO as well as a withdrawal of NATO troops from several nearby countries.
