The deployment of US troops in at least three different European countries amid ongoing tensions with Russia was announced by the Pentagon press secretary John Kirby in a briefing in Washington DC on Wednesday.

“The United States will soon move additional forces to Poland, Romania and Germany,” Kirby stated, adding that the forces would “ensure the robust defence of our NATO allies.”

Kirby clarified that these deployments would not be permanent but also warned that there could be others if necessary.

One thousand of these soldiers are expected to be redeployed from Germany to Romania while another 2,000 others will be sent to Europe directly from the United States.

The press briefing was held amidst ongoing Russia-Ukraine tensions and the leak published by Spanish newspaper El Pais purporting to show parts of the US and NATO response to Russia’s security proposals.
