USA: "Deeply concerning"- Pentagon press sec Kirby on Taliban advances in Afghanistan

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby stated that the recent Taliban advance in Afghanistan was ‘deeply concerning’ during a press briefing in Washington DC on Friday, weeks before the official withdrawal of US military troops from the region.

“I’m not going to speculate about surprise. We’re obviously watching this just like you’re watching this and seeing it happen in real-time and it’s deeply concerning.”

The Taliban have swiftly gained control of terriory in the south, north and west, including Khandar in the south and Herat in the west.

“If you just look at what the Taliban’s been doing, you can see that they are trying to isolate Kabul,” referring to the situation in Kabul, and added that the capital “is not right now, in an imminent-threat environment.”

President Joe Biden announced earlier in July that all US troops were to withdraw from Afghanistan by August 31, just before the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
