USA: White House Spox defends National Security Council statement on Taliban

White House Press secretary Jen Psaki defended National Security Council spokesperson Emily Horne who called the Taliban ‘businesslike and professional’ after the first evacuation of Americans from Afghanistan since the end of the US’ military withdrawal, during a press briefing on Thursday in Washington DC.
“You know that in that statement, what we were announcing was that a Qatari airline flight successfully landed in Qatar with American citizens, legal permanent residents and Afghans on board who joined us in our fight over the last several years,” she said. “In order to get those people out, we had to work with some members of the Taliban to press them and to work in a businesslike manner to get them out. That is what we were stating in the statement.”
The Qatar Airways flight leaving from Hamid Karzai International Airport, Afghanistan landed in Doha on Thursday with American citizens, permanent residence holders and Afghan staff on board.
“We are here to celebrate the return of American citizens who wanted to leave Afghanistan, of legal permanent residents, of Afghans who fought by our side to Qatar,” Psaki said.
The press secretary went on to announce President Joe Biden’s new federal vaccine requirements that were revealed Thursday afternoon. Answering a question about mandatory vaccines for employees of private companies, she said to ‘stay tuned’.
Biden introduced a new programme requiring all companies in the private sector with more than 100 workers to vaccinate or test their staff weekly.

We promised we would get American citizens out, we promised we would get legal permanent residents out, we promised we would get our afghan partners out. And we promised we’d pressed the Taliban to get them out and that’s exactly what we did.”
