The trial of former Brooklyn Center police officer Kimberly Potter charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter for killing Daunte Wright on April 2021 continued in the Hennepin County Courthouse in Minneapolis, Thursday.
Police expert and defence’s first witness Stephen Ijames gave his assessment of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Ijames said that he considered that the arrest to be legitimate as it would have been ‘dereliction of duty not to’ arrest Wright. He added that “the use of the taser would have been the appropriate tool and that’s what she was trying to do.”
Potter, a white officer who resigned following the shooting after 26 years on the job, appeared to believe that she was using her taser when she fired her service gun at Wright, a young black man.
In the footage of the shooting, Potter can be heard shouting ‘taser’ several times before firing.
Potter has been accused on charges of first and second-degree manslaughter and has entered a not-guilty plea.
The trial is the highest-profile prosecution of a police officer case since Derek Chauvin’s trial, who was convicted of murdering George Floyd earlier this year.
