Venezuela: Low turnout as Caracas locals sign for recall of President Maduro

Signature collection points appeared quiet after residents were given the chance to vote to recall President Maduro, as seen in Caracas on Wednesday.
According to the country’s constitution, voters may petition for a recall election once a president has served half of his term, as has President Maduro.
The recall election may go ahead should twenty percent of voters in each state sign.
On Friday, the National Electoral Council announced that signatures for such a vote would be collected, but allowed only a 12-hour window during which citizens would be able to sign.
One local resident described the situation as ‘impossible,’ accusing the electoral council of not leaving enough time after the announcement for voters to find out about the petition.

SOT, Oscar Arnal, Member of MOVER movement (Spanish): “Unfortunately, the proposed conditions make it impossible for this process to be carried out, putting on make-up, that is, enabling it but with a big ‘early morning,’ in what sense? In that they only occur, let’s say from the weekend, that the decision of the National Electoral Council, there are only two days, Monday and Tuesday, for people to find out.”

SOT, Ender Molina, Local resident (Spanish): “Well, this morning I went by and saw the activity, I asked the Venezuelan National Guard and they told me it was for the recall, I had already been listening and well, I cast my vote.”
