American athlete Kai Owens is a member of the US Olympic team that will attend the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022 as part of the mogul skiers team, as seen during practice in Park City, Utah, on Friday.
The 17-year-old athlete was adopted at a very young age from China by a family from Vail, Colorado, where she started moguls skiing at the age of six years old.
“I was born in China, was adopted when I was 16 months old and brought to the US. So, it is definitely very personal for me to go back to the country I was born in,” said the athlete, adding, “I worked on it with my psychologist to work through the kind of some emotions that could pop up when I am in China.”
Even though she felt ‘nervous’ about competing at this level, Owens said to be focussed on performing to the best of her ability, and hopefully, also receiving a medal.
The Beijing Winter Olympics will be held from February 4 until February 22, and amid the diplomatic rift the US has shown towards the hosts, the US athletes will attend the competition.

But my parents here in the US have done just an incredible job of helping me cope, and I’ve learned to accept my heritage. I have honestly enjoyed it, I love Asian food, I love celebrating the Chinese holidays. So, I also look forward to it, I worked on it with my psychologist to work through the kind of some emotions that could pop up when I am in China, but I am just really looking forward to experiencing as much culture as I can and focusing on competing.”
