Dozens of arrests were made in Rotterdam as protests denouncing COVID curbs turned violent on Friday night.

The Netherlands imposed a ‘partial lockdown’ a week ago in an effort to tackle record numbers of COVID cases, with the daily average now at 18,659.

As tensions escalated during the protests, multiple vehicles were damaged and torched. Police fired warning shots and used water cannon to quell the protests.

Some police cars had their windscreens and windows smashed, and a number of officers were injured in the violence.

Injuries were also reported among the protesters, with two people wounded after police fired shots during the protests.
