We will ROC you! Graffiti in support of Russian Olympic athletes adorns Moscow

A mural painted in support of the Russian athletes competing in the Olympic Games could be seen adorning the wall of a house in the centre of Moscow on Saturday.

The graffiti depicts two judoists in front of Mount Fuji. The kimono of the Russian athlete is symbolically decorated with Misha Bear, the mascot of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games held in Moscow.

The action is part of a flash mob launched by TV presenter Tina Kandelaki to support the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), forced to perform at the Olympic Games without a national flag and national anthem due to a two-year sanction imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The flash mob gained traction in many cities of Russia, where various drawings with the hashtag #wewillROCyou appear on houses, sidewalks and fences.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented on the pun, which plays on the lyrics of the British band Queen’s song ‘We will rock you,’
saying that “it translates as ‘we will defeat you.’ If such an abbreviation was approved for us, well, it means that it obliges us to additionally try to win every one.”
