Afghanistan: Jalalabad hospital struggles to treat malnourished infants amid food crisis

Children suffering from malnutrition were seen being treated at Nangarhar Regional Hospital, Jalalabad, on Monday, as the country faces a food crisis.

Beds at Nangarhar Regional Hospital appeared filled with patients, with several children sometimes sharing one bed.

“Actually we have 12 beds for malnutrition patients but sometimes we have two or three patients in one bed, this is not good but we don’t have another way,” said paediatric ward head Wahidullah Habibi.

Zulikha, mother of one of the patients, explained how she had brought her child to the hospital in hopes of receiving baby formula.

Elsewhere in the city, children could be seen selling food from stalls, working at a local garage, and gathering rubbish to earn money.

“Every day I’m going to collect plastics,” said rubbish collecter Gul Mohammad, adding, “it’s because my father doesn’t have a job, there is no opportunity for me to go to school.”

A report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) in October estimated that 22.8 million Afghans will face acute food insecurity this winter, following the Taliban takeover earlier in the year.
