Afghani barber shops saw a drop in customers following a return of Taliban rule, hairdressers in Khost said on Sunday.
“As the new government come to Afghanistan, the shopkeepers and barbers are facing lack of customers and the manner have been changed, the work is not like before”, said a barber Farid whose daily income dropped from 2000-3000 afghanis to 500 (between 22,50 euros / US$26,60 and 29,40 euros / US$34,70 down to 4,90 euros / US$5,80).
A barbershop client Tahir stressed that residents are scared to shave beards due to the return of the radical Islamist order of daily life.
“Before a lot of people came to barbers, and they had no fear, but nowadays they feel scared”, he said.
During the rule in the 1990s, the Taliban sanctioned men for shaving beards with beatings, considering it a non-Islamic behaviour.
Taliban forces have retaken full control of Afghanistan as the United States officially concluded its 20-year deployment in the country on August 30.

SOT, Tahir, Khost resident, (Pashto): “Before a lot of people came to the barbers, and they had no fear, but nowadays they feel scared, it means they are scared, they could not come to barbers to cut hairs or forming the beards, to come and cut beards or apply designs on their beards as they feel scared.”
SOT, Fazil Rahman, Barber, (Pashto): “You are right, before our work was very good, before when the customer was coming to apply different designs and shapes, we were getting customer orders to form their beards, but now our work changed regarding hair cutting. Before we had different customers, I was earned about 2,000 afghanis (22,50 euros / US$26,60) to 3,000 afghanis (29,40 euros / US$34,70) daily, now as the government changed our work have been affected and there are changes in our work, I make 800 (7,80 euros / US$9,20) to 900 (8,80 euros / US$10,40), which is not enough to fulfil my needs.”
SOT, Farid, Barber, (Pashto): “As the new government come to Afghanistan, the shopkeepers and barbers are facing lack of customers and the manner have been changed, the work is not like before, for example, I have a barber shop in Khost province, before I had earned 2,000 afghanis to 3,000 afghanis daily now, I earn just 500 (4,90 euros / US$5,80).”
SOT, Farid, Barber, (Pashto): “Before a lot of people were coming to cut their hairs and beards and they used to apply designs on hair and beard, but now the people feel scared and they don’t cut hairs and beards as before as they yet don’t receive any warning from anyone even not we but generally it effects on work system, and I demand from the current government to pay attention on this issue until my work or not just my work, but all work of the people must be at least promoted.” *LOOSE TRANSLATION AT SOURCE*
