Crowds of women in Mazar-e-Sharif took to the streets on Monday, in protest of Taliban plans to install a government without women.

Protesters could be seen marching with signs, and later seemed to be engaged in an argument with several Taliban militants.

Activist Kubra Safdari explained how the protesters didn’t fear ‘murder, gunfire and tear gas’, and were there instead to stop the Taliban from spreading lies about women, stating, “Freedom is the most important right of Afghan women.”

Meanwhile, Taliban member Abdul Qadir Halimi branded the recent women-led rallies as having been sparked by ‘propaganda from our enemies’.

“Your rights and women’s rights should not be fought for in the streets and Bazars, you should use your voices to call us, we would even come to your homes to hear your voices. And then we would convey your voices to the central government, and the central government are ready to make positive decisions which will benefit the people,” Halimi said.

Taliban have assumed control in Afghanistan as the United States officially concluded its 20-year deployment in the country on August 30.

SOT, Qudsia Shujazada, Female activist (Dari): “Women from various parties have gathered here to protest for their rights, and to raise their voices for the new government, amongst those voices are women from Kabul, Nimruz and Balkh. We demand from other women who are in the other provinces not to be afraid, we must stand with each other for our rights, together for our rights.”

SOT, Kubra Safdari, Female activist (Dari): “We don’t fear murder, gunfire and tear gas, and we don’t want their fake words and the lies that [the Taliban] have made to the women of Herat. We want our rights, and freedom is the most important right of Afghan women.”

SOT, Karima Shujazada, Female activist (Dari): “Many families have only daughters who work and support them, and there are a large number of single, working women, and recently they are going hungry. If it continues like this then a big crisis will take place, if they leave women jobless, it is clearly against our human rights, and also those women who work and support their families will remain jobless.”

SOT, Abdul Qadir Halimi, Taliban member (Pashto): “It is propaganda of our enemies, propaganda against Islam and the Islamic Emirate which they often spread to create distance between the Islamic Emirate and its people. They brought our women to the streets and made them rebel. Your rights and women’s rights should not be fought for in the streets and Bazars, you should use your voices to call us, we would even come to your homes to hear your voices. And then we would convey your voices to the central government, and the central government are ready to make positive decisions which will benefit the people.”
