Afghanistan: Protesters demand Biden unfreezes funds in Kabul

Hundreds of pro-Taliban protesters marched through the streets of Kabul on Sunday, to rally against US sanctions and call for the release of Afghan economic assets.

The demonstrators marched towards the US Embassy, demanding the unfreezing of about €8.3bn ($9.5bn) in central bank assets, which were blocked by US President Joe Biden’s administration in August. The country is already teetering on the edge of starvation.

“We call on the international community to put pressure on them (the US) and liberate Afghanistan’s wealth,” said protester Mohammad Nasim, during the march.

The aid was frozen after the Taliban took over the country, with the US attempting to use the aid as leverage to stop women’s rights being infringed upon.

United Nations estimates at least half of Afghanistan’s population, 23 million people, will be affected by the food shortage this winter.

SOT, Ihsanullah, Protester: All know that the war which was fought since the last 22 years has ended tragically. As a result, to be Islamic and independent Afghan government come to power. The (inaudible) has occurred due to Afghan (inaudible) and financial sacrifices. And it is acceptable to all Afghans, [the] world should keep respect our sacrifices and keep their hands to themselves in our home office. Afghanistan is into a lot of difficulties. Out of these two big reasons one is Afghanistan should be officially recognised, secondly asking you and legitimate appeals should be stopped and interact bravery with Afghanistan.”
