Afghanistan’s new Taliban government will be formally announced soon said acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi during a speech at the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad on Friday.

Muttaqi was in Pakistan to hold talks with the Pakistani leadership, the first official ones since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan last August.

“Embassies are opened in our country and our embassies, consulates and representations in foreign countries are operational. So we are basically the recognized de facto official government of Afghanistan. You will see soon the official recognition formally,” he told the audience.

During the visit, Muttaqi also met his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, to review bilateral relations and raise the issue of granting visas to Afghan nationals.

SOT, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Acting Afghan Foreign Minister: “According to international principles and standards set for a government to be recognised officially, one is geography. The second is a certain population presence, the third is that this population must be under the influence and control of that government and fourthly the government must provide security. So is there anyone who can say that we have not fulfilled these prerequisites?”

SOT, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Acting Afghan Foreign Minister: “As I said earlier, we opened the boys schools from grade 1 to 12 at the initial stage. In the second phase, we opened the girl’s schools from grade 1-6. In the third phase, we have opened the girls schools from grade 7 to upward and boys schools from grade 12 upwards in some of the provinces and this progress will continue.”

SOT, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Acting Afghan Foreign Minister: “We listen to the world, and listen carefully to them. We consult our elders and take actions on the advice which is in the benefit of our people. When we react it doesn’t mean that we are neglecting the advice. We are only demanding for the world to listen to us.”
