Albania: Opposition leader testifies over January 8th protest

Leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha testified in court, on Friday in Tirana, over the protest on January 8th in which offices of the centre-right Democratic Party of Albania were raided.

Asked outside the court by journalists on the issue, Basha said “the Democratic Party was subject to a barbarian and violent attack. I ask for the responsible people who organized or inspired the events to be put in front of the Justice.”

He added former president Sali Berisha was putting “his personal interest that he is putting before the democrat’s interests.”

Berisha has since been officially expelled from the party along with other senior officials, all accused of having questioned Basha’s legitimacy.

The violence was controlled, organized, and ordered by Sali Berisha and a mercenary criminal group. The democrats were called in the protest to be used as a façade, only a few of them answered the call but they stayed out of the violence. I say to all of the democrats that this is a day we should never have experienced due to the personal interests of nobody. This is very big damage caused to our political family due to the selfishness of Sali Berisha and his personal interest that he is putting before the democrat’s interests.”

I also say to the democrats we will not waste our time in this trap that our political enemies want to keep us. We should be in front of the battle to release Albania from this nightmare caused by the bad governing of the country, that Sali Berisha is helping with the actions of the January 8th protest. We are wasting valuable time, time that we should have used for the public good, asking the prosecution of people who are abusing their power. We should be focused on a full battle to overturn the government.”
