The ominous sight of Russian troops massed on Ukraine’s northern border is a worrying one for NATO leaders.

Since the 2014 annexation of Crimea, the Eastern European nation has been the frontline between the Western defensive alliance, and the Kremlin.

Pro-Russian rebels control large parts of eastern Ukraine since a ferocious war erupted nearly eight years ago.

Some 14,000 people were killed and at least two million fled their homes before fragile peace agreements were brokered.
