Nurses and health care personnel marched through downtown Buenos Aires with torches demanding professional recognition and salary improvements on Wednesday.
Protesters marched from Congress Square with self-made torches and banners reading, ‘Professional labour and salary recognition for nurses.’ Present at the march were members of the Association of Nursing Graduates (ALE) and other organisations.
“After the pandemic, tired, stressed, and without vacation days, we continue working for miserable wages. We need decent wages for a better quality of life, for our families and ourselves,” explained Maria Lorena Diez.
Among the demands of being recognised professionally and being part of the permanent staff, protesters are asking for a 100,000 pesos bonus (around $917,00) and the inclusion of nursing activities in law 6035, which would improve their working conditions.
The first ‘March of the torches’ was held on May 21, on International Nursing Day.

SOT, Carolina Caceres, Nurse (Spanish): “After this pandemic, we have been without licenses for almost a year and a half and with a lot of exhaustion, but above all without salary or labour and professional recognition.”
SOT, Carolina Caceres, Nurse (Spanish): “We demand a year-end bonus that allows us to spend the holidays in peace, and of course, a salary recognition that exceeds the basic family basket for the entire sector with job recognition and an entry to the permanent plant of all hired colleagues who are working through mono tax.”
