Thousands took to Berlin streets, Saturday, to demand more staff and better working conditions in the German capital hospitals.
Demonstrators rallied in support of the ongoing strike by the Charite and Vivantes hospitals healthcare staff as negotiations about labour conditions are ongoing.
“We are fighting to get more stuff hired in Vivantes and Charite and for all the hospitals in Berlin. We also want the nurses to get paid properly. The hospitals work thanks to the teamwork and it cannot be that the employees don’t get paid accordingly,” protester Olivia said.
The Berlin Hospital Movement, which had called for the demonstration, said 5,000 people took part in the march.
Both hospitals released statements saying that urgent surgeries and other similar urgent medical care will not be impacted by the strike.

SOT, Heike, Nurse (German): “We have been working since years ago, are understaffed and we have needs like any other job. But we cannot take care of the people as we used to. We don’t have time to hold the hand of someone who’s dying. We have to leave them alone because we don’t have time and we need more personnel in the hospitals. We are fighting for relief in order to be able to attend to people as they deserve.”
