Argentina: Rival demonstrations gather outside Cuban Embassy in Buenos Aires

Two competing demonstrations were held at the Cuban Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, one against the Cuban government and another in support, on Monday.

Unions, social organisations and left-wing parties gathered in front of the embassy, in solidarity with the Cuban government and called for an end to the US embargo on the island nation, while counter demonstrations rallied on the other side of a police barricade.

“We are supporting the people of Cuba who are protesting in Cuban streets,” said Marta Quesada, a Cuban citizen living in Argentina. “Cubans are suffering misery, hunger, especially lack of freedom, they are hungry for freedom, they are blaming a supposed Cuban blockade for the entire situation.”

Thousands joined demonstrations against the Cuban government in demonstrations around the world, on Monday. Cuba has accused the US government of organising the protests to destabilise the country, while the United States called on Cuban government to allow peaceful rallies to take place on the island.
