Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Tuesday afternoon in Plaza de Mayo to reject the government’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
The massive protest, the second in less than two months, aimed to denounce the repayment of the country’s debt to the IMF following years of debt crisis.
“One thing is to sign it, another thing is to apply it, I think that they will not be able to calmly deal with the looting, contamination, precariousness, and all the consequences that this agreement will lead to,” said one protester.
Following several months of speculation and economic and political tension, the Argentinian government reached an agreement last month regarding the 44 billion US dollars debt it owes to the IMF.
The agreement will now be sent to Congress for debate and eventual approval.
SOT, Federico Winokur, Protester (Spanish): “It is as if they returned to the viceroyalty of Río de la Plata due to the colonial conditions that this agreement implies. At the same time, there are a lot of consequences in terms of the adjustment, because the conditions that it imposes imply a reduction in spending so great that it leads death and impacts health, education, wages of workers.”
SOT, Celeste Fierro, Protester (Spanish): “The government since it took office despite saying it was a scam during the campaign, guaranteed each one of the payments to the International Monetary Fund, had a speech for a social base that it hoped would be different from the government of Mauricio Macri, but the reality is guaranteed pay is Macri’s government scam.”
SOT, Vilma Ripoll, Protester (Spanish): “One thing is to sign it, another thing is to apply it, I think that they will not be able to calmly deal with the looting, contamination, precariousness, and all the consequences that this agreement will lead to.”
