Representatives for China’s National Health Commission’s disease control and prevention bureau confirmed that the COVID-19 situation remained ‘grim’ and ‘complex’ and called for more control at ports and airports to keep spread under control, speaking during a Beijing conference on Saturday.

Earlier on the day, the General Office of the State Council issued a notice requesting strict control over the movement of people in cities at land border ports.

“Increased control is particularly important now,” said Liang Wannian, Vice-director of the medical reform office under the State Council, due to the upcoming Winter Olympic Games as well as New Year’s Day and Spring Festival, when cases are expected to increase.

He Qinghua, Inspector for China’s National Health Commission’s disease control and prevention bureau, mentioned that the threat of the Omicron variant confirmed the need to remain vigilant.

“The epidemic prevention and control work of the two festivals—the New Year’s Day and Spring Festival for this year must be paid great attention to without the slightest carelessness,” said Qinghua, confirming the need to increase control on travel coming into China at airports and border ports.

China has reported 111,413 cases and 4,849 deaths as of December 3, 2021. China enforced strict travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has announced that the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 will not be open for international travellers.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, He Qinghua, Inspector for China’s National Health Commission’s disease control and prevention bureau (Mandarin): “At present, the global epidemic prevention and control situation is still grim and complex, and the epidemic situation in many countries is still at high risk. The Omicron mutants have spread in 77 countries and regions around the world. In the face of such a grim situation, the epidemic prevention and control work of the two festivals—the New Year’s Day and Spring Festival for this year must be paid great attention to without the slightest carelessness.”

SOT, He Qinghua, Inspector for China’s National Health Commission’s disease control and prevention bureau (Mandarin): “On the basis of summing up the experience of epidemic prevention and control during the two holidays in 2021, various measures should be more accurate and scientific, so as to ensure the safe and orderly travel of people and ensure that everyone has a healthy and safe holiday.”

SOT, He Qinghua, Inspector for China’s National Health Commission’s disease control and prevention bureau (Mandarin):“Generally speaking, the recent epidemic situation in China still shows the characteristics of local distribution and large-scale aggregation. Airports and border ports are the main ways to import the epidemic, mainly imported cases from abroad and related products carrying the virus, such as cold chain goods, mainly caused by people and products.”

SOT, Liang Wannian, Vice-director of medical reform office under State Council (Mandarin): “Beijing should continue to maintain relatively strict epidemic control measures before implementing major activities, such as the Winter Olympic Games and the Winter Paralympic Games. As I just mentioned, the key in other regions is to do a good risk assessment and take into account the level of risk.”

SOT, Liang Wannian, Vice-director of medical reform office under State Council (Mandarin): “The cumulative amount of vaccination in our country has exceeded 2.6 billion doses, so that people have a certain degree of immunity. The cases we have now are basically related overseas, and there is basically no source of infection in our country.”

SOT, Liang Wannian, Vice-director of the medical reform office under the State Council (Mandarin): “Therefore, our country should be very safe, as long as to implement strict epidemic control measures in terms of possible overseas imported cases, our country is generally safe.”
