Belgium: Clean-up operations start after new wave of floods hit the country

Clean-up operations commenced on Sunday in the towns of Namur and Dinant after another flood caused by heavy rainfall hit the south of Belgium on Saturday.

Rescue teams and citizens were seen sweeping and pumping water out of the streets in Namur.

“We received help from many more citizens. We made a request for help on facebook and we really have a lot of people, and we thank everyone because they did a great job,” said local resident Adrien Scarbote.

In the town of Dinant, the thunderstorm resulted in serious damage of the infrastructure as streets were torn open and cars swept away by the flooding.

“It started at about 5pm and there was nothing we could do. We didn’t have time to put up the furniture in the house, we couldn’t do anything. I had 10-12cm in the house, it was incredible, I’ve never seen anything like it. According to the neighbours, it happened 40 years ago, but the water was just trickling down. Of this magnitude, no one has ever seen it,” Patricia Peeters said about the flood in Dinant.

No fatalities have been reported in the region as of Sunday evening. Parts of Belgium were hit by floods earlier this month destroying significant parts of the infrastructure and leaving at least 36 people dead. Weather forecasts for region have predicted ongoing rainfall until Tuesday.

We have water in the car and this morning, fortunately, we started it up. There is damage to the bodywork because a lot of concrete has hit the car.”

SOT, Patricia Peeters, citizen of Dinant (French): “They are still forecasting storms but I hope it won’t happen again because it’s unimaginable.”

SOT, Lea Joannes, Citizen of Namur (French): “I’m worried because I know they’re predicting more storms tonight, tonight and tomorrow so we’re not doing this for nothing but we’ll probably have to start again tomorrow.”
