The newly-inaugurated German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attended his first EU Council meeting, as seen in Brussels on Thursday.
Scholz announced that the previous day’s talks had included the hybrid attack by the government of Belarus against Poland, for which solidarity with Poland had been expressed.
“We will do everything together to reject [the attack on Poland] and to ensure that what the regime [in Belarus] has come up with does not work,” said Scholz.
Scholz also commented on Foreign Minister’s decision to expel Russian diplomats from Germany, following a guilty verdict in the trial of a Russian who shot a Chechen militant in a Berlin park.
“It is also absolutely right that the Foreign Minister has responded to this with a clear answer,” Scholz stated.
In addition, the German chancellor spoke regarding the amassing of Russian troops at the Ukraine border, and stressed the importance of ‘secure borders.’
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor (German): “I am pleased that after yesterday’s talks with the Eastern Partnership we are continuing today with the European Council. Yesterday and today we discussed very important issues, in particular those that concern us with regard to the hybrid attack from Belarus on the European border, where we expressed our solidarity with Poland, which is really challenged and we will do everything together to reject this and to ensure that what the regime there has come up with does not work.”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor (German): “And then we deal with the issues that must always concern us, the question of how we act together against the COVID-19 pandemic, how we manage to protect the health of citizens and how we manage to stop human-made climate change - big tasks, in other words.”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor (German): “The verdict that we have now heard and seen on the murder in the Tiergarten is a clear indication that bad things have happened here and therefore it is also absolutely right that the Foreign Minister has responded to this with a clear answer.”
SOT, Olaf Scholz, German chancellor (German): “I think it is important that we always commit that there are secure borders, that they remain inviolable and that we all define that together.”
