Belgium: "Important week for European security" - NATO chief ahead of Ukraine talks

NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg spoke at a press conference before the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC) session, from NATO HQ in Brussels on Monday.
Stoltenberg warned that an increase in Russian military aggression or build up at the Ukraine-Russia border would carry a “high political and economic price.”
“Any further aggression against Ukraine would come at a high political and economic price. NATO allies are united in their support for all nations to choose their own path,” Stoltenberg went on to say.
Stoltenberg was joined at the press conference by Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olga Stefanishyna.
“The aggressor is not in a position to put conditions [on the table] until Russian tanks are out of the Ukrainian border,” the deputy PM said.
Events that lead the NATO chief to describe the week as important include American-Russian talks which begin Monday, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) meet on Thursday and the NATO-Russia council will meet on Wednesday.
Stoltenberg described Russia’s willingness to meet for the NATO-Russia council as positive.

Ukraine is valued and longstanding partner to NATO and todays meeting of the NATO-Ukraine commission comes at the start of an important week for European security.”

SOT, Olga Stefanishyna, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration: “The aggressor is not in a position to put conditions [on the table] until Russian tanks are out of the Ukrainian border. We see as Russia attempts to shift the discussion by threatening with a new war without moving any step forward towards a peaceful settlement within the Minsk and Normandy formats. What Russia is doing is trying to impose its agenda instead of returning to the negotiation table.”

SOT, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General: “I welcome the meeting that will take place later on this week, on Wednesday in the NATO-Russia Council. I welcome the meeting that takes place in Geneva today between the US and Russia and the OSC (Organisation for Security and Cooperation) meeting later on this week. But I don’t think we can expect that these meetings will solve all the issues. What we are hoping for is that we can agree on a way forward, that we can agree on a series of meetings, that we can agree on a process. So it is not realistic to expect that when we have finished this week, when we have finished meetings that are already scheduled, that the problems will be solved. But I really hope that there is a real will on both sides, including on the Russian side, at least on the NATO side to engage in a process that can prevent a new armed conflict in Europe.”
