Protest rallies were held by both anti-government and pro-government groups in La Paz on Wednesday, as political tensions in Bolivia continue, with protests held daily for the past week.

“We are meeting here with various social organisations of the city, because we are upset with the impudence that the mayor has had to continue with the strikes, continue with the blockades, continue with the massacre of the economy of all Pacenos (La Paz residents) and all Bolivians,” commented Elias Clavijo, a pro-government protester.

Police were present to separate the two protest groups from entering into a direct confrontation.

“We are rejecting the package of rules that threaten our freedom and we ask for the restitution of two thirds in the plurinational assembly,” said anti-government protester Mauro Cuellar.

Anti-government protesters and opposition politicians have been arguing for the restitution of a resolution from 2020 which allows the government to pass motions with a two-thirds majority rather than the smaller absolute majority. The opposition has also been protesting against a new law that aims to tackle money laundering.
