Bulgaria: Hospitality workers march in Sofia against new COVID health pass rule

Hundreds of workers, including many restaurant and fitness centre owners, marched across Sofia to protest the new COVID-19 health pass rule on Thursday.

During the demonstration, protesters demanded that authorities abolish the mandatory health pass on all people seeking to enter indoor entertainment venues and restaurants.

Bulgaria is facing a surge in COVID-19 infections and deaths amid the lowest vaccination rates in Europe.

SOT, Emil Kostadinov, Protester and restaurant owner (Bulgarian): “I’m wondering why I can travel by subway or visit the local municipality and other institutions without certificate, but it becomes compulsory for my workplace.”

SOT, Richard Alibegov, Protest organiser and President of Bulgarian Association of Restaurants (Bulgarian): “These people must not be here. They must be at the restaurants, at the fitness center, at their workplaces. We have no work here on the square. Thank you.”

SOT, Zornica Apostolova, Protester (Bulgarian): “My main reason for being here is that I completely disagree with the current medical discrimination which we are witnessing.”
