Bulgaria: Spanish def min visits airbase near Plovdiv as joint NATO continues

Defence Ministers from Spain and Bulgaria inspected the Graf Ignatievo airbase, near Plovdiv on Monday, where the two forces are conducting joint NATO missions over the Black Sea.

“I believe that unity is our main strength, our main power. Most of all the Bulgarian and Spanish behaviour, as well as the other NATO members, are part of a very important point in these difficult moments to have a firm and clear position in favour of the dialogue and the diplomacy,” said minister Margarita Robles.

Four Eurofighter EF-2000 Typhoon jet fighters of the Spanish Air Force landed earlier this month to collaborate with the Bulgarian air force until the end of March. The aim is to perform airspace protection amid the Ukraine tensions.

SOT, Stefan Yanev, Bulgarian, Minister of Defence (Bulgarian): “We are working for united efforts to show our defensive potential, we are united in the demonstration of solidarity between allies. But at the same time, we are maintaining that the best resolution for a conflict is the diplomatic one. Let’s not delude ourselves by thinking that there is another good resolve. There is no other good solution – even the worst peace is better that any war.”
