Chile began administering the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to immunocompromised people over the age of 12, as filmed in footage captured at the country’s largest vaccination centre Espacio Esperanza, set up in Santiago’s La Florida stadium on Monday.

“We are the first in the world to implement the fourth dose and that also influences the figures with the mortality from COVID. Clearly the impact is great because although our neighbouring countries are having a very serious health crisis in terms of contagion, we as a country are seeing that we are holding back the pandemic and avoiding so many deaths due to the booster vaccines,” said vaccination coordinator nurse at Espacio Esperanza Barbara Gonzalez, .

The new vaccination campaign is taking place at a time when the omicron variant of the virus has skyrocketed the number of infections around the world.

Chile is the first country in Latin America to apply the second booster dose and the second in the world, after Israel.

From 7 February, the application of this new booster will be extended to the entire population, starting with people over 55 years of age.

According to data from the Chilean Ministry of Health, since the country’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign began on 24 December 2020, 14,031,389 people have received the full course of the vaccine, or 92.3 per cent of the population.
