Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying condemned the US for having left ‘turmoil, division and destruction in Afghanistan, as she spoke during a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.
The comment comes as the Taliban took control over Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, on Sunday, causing chaos in the city.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Beijing hopes the US can learn from its past mistakes on military intervention and ‘stop wanton interference’ in the internal affairs of the other countries.

SOT, Hua Chunying, China MOFA spokesperson (Mandarin): “Recently, Yue Xiaoyong, China’s special envoy on Afghanistan has been carrying out intensive shuttles, visits, and mediation between Afghanistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran, and other relevant countries.”
SOT, Hua Chunying, China MOFA spokesperson (Mandarin): “Last night, China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi was invited to talk on the phone with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and US Secretary of State Blinken. China also participated in the emergency meeting on Afghanistan issues by the UN Security Council. China encouraged the Afghan Taliban to pursue a moderate and prudent religious policy. The two sides should work together to form an open and inclusive political structure, seek a peaceful and friendly foreign policy, and especially being in harmony with neighboring countries to achieve the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan. We also hope that the new Afghan regime should draw a clear line between various international terrorist forces, restrain and combat terrorist forces including the “East Turkestan Islamic Movement,” and prevent Afghanistan from becoming a gathering place for terrorist extremist forces again. China will also maintain close communication with all relevant parties to coordinate and boost the cessation of war in Afghanistan as soon as possible to achieve lasting peace.”
SOT, Hua Chunying, China MOFA spokesperson (Mandarin): “Frankly, since yesterday, I have seen pictures of the chaos at Kabul Airport on TV and the Internet, especially when some were eager to follow the American airplane to evacuate, but unfortunately they fell from the landing gear and died. The video was very shocking. The chaos at Kabul airport in the past few days seems to have happened before, and I regret seeing it.”
SOT, Hua Chunying, China MOFA spokesperson (Mandarin): “The United States started the war in Afghanistan with the excuse of anti-terrorism, but did the United States win? In the past 20 years, Afghanistan’s number of terrorist organisations has grown from single digits to more than 20. Has the United States brought peace to the Afghan people? In the past 20 years, more than 100,000 Afghan civilians were killed or injured under the guns of the US military and its allies, and more than 10 million people were displaced. The war in Afghanistan caused an average of 60 million dollars in losses every day, which seriously affected the economic and social development of Afghanistan. More than 2,400 US soldiers died, and it has cost more than 2 trillion dollars from the US military.”
SOT, Hua Chunying, China MOFA spokesperson (Mandarin): “I have noticed that President Biden said that the goal of the United States in Afghanistan is not to rebuild the country. He was right. In Iraq, Syria, or Afghanistan, wherever the US military goes, it leaves behind the turmoil, division, and destruction of homes and people. It has always left behind a shambles. The power and role of the United States is destruction, not construction.”
SOT, Hua Chunying, China MOFA spokesperson (Mandarin): “As State Councilor Wang Yi emphasised during a conversation on the phone call with US Secretary of State Blinken last night, facts have once again proved that military intervention and power politics are not supported by the people and will eventually fail. If the foreign model is mechanically applied to a country with a completely different history, culture, and national conditions, it will be difficult to gain a foothold in the end. Solving problems with military force will only increase problems. I have also noticed that President Biden said in his speech that he would not make the mistake of investing too much energy in other countries’ civil wars and reshaping them through endless military intervention. I hope that the US can seriously reflect on its policy of military intervention and brutality at every turn, stop wanton interference in the internal affairs of other countries, even under the guise of democracy and human rights, or undermine the peace and stability of other countries and regions.”
