China: Beijing residents queue for COVID test as first locally-transmitted Omicron case reported

The Chinese government tightened its anti-epidemic policy on Sunday as the first locally transmitted Omicron COVID variant case was confirmed on Saturday in the Haidian district.

Less than three weeks before Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the government has imposed the zero-COVID strategy. However, the first domestically transmitted case of the Omicron variant was reported and officials have sealed the residential compound and workplace of the patient.

As the epidemiological investigation shows the infected person has been to a shopping mall in Chaoyang district, the people who work in the blocks around the area are requested to do the COVID test.
