China: US negative impact on Afghanistan will linger on for years - FM spox

Beijing condemned the US for its actions on Afghanistan, during China’s foreign ministry press briefing in Beijing on Monday, saying the impact of the war in the country will last a long time.

“As the culprit of the Afghan issue, the US has inflicted enormous loss and suffering on the Afghan people in the two-decade-long war. The negative impact will linger on for years to come,” spokesperson Wang Wenbin said.

“Moreover, the US should reflect on its mistakes, draw hard lessons, stop wanton military intervention in other countries, stop imposing its own ideology and values on others, and avoid repeating the mistakes it made in Afghanistan,” the spokesperson told the press.

Commenting on the White House remarks that Russia and China want the US to stay in Afghanistan because it ties up American resources, Wenbin said, “Such attempts to find excuses for the US’ own failure also serve to reveal once again its hegemonic nature of pursuing power politics in the world.”

The Foreign Ministry remarks follow up on statements made last week regarding China’s relationship with Afghanistan, recalling that Beijing promised to keep its embassy open in the country and “strengthen” relations in the region.
