Jerusalem District authorities are investigating a suspect who opened fire on passers-by in the Old City in East Jerusalem, leaving one dead and at least four wounded on Sunday.

“We are currently responding by providing a solution throughout the surrounding area, including the Temple Mount and the Old City, and of course in other circles, and there is no doubt that this is a serious incident and the police response prevented further harm to others. A determined and dignified activity. Commented Doron Turgeman, Jerusalem District Commander.

Officers closed off the area to investigate the scene and collect the gun used in the attack. The assailant was shot dead by police.

A terrorist came from East Jerusalem to the Old City and opened fire on passers-by. The suspect seriously harmed two civilians. Within 32 seconds, police responded to the incident from several directions and neutralised the gunfire threat. Unfortunately, out of the two gunshot wounded, one was seriously injured but his condition has stabilised, and one was killed. Two policemen were slightly injured.”

There is no doubt that this is a very serious attack carried out by an entity that is currently known to us but not at the terroristic level. Unfortunately we have one victim who was shot and killed, one severely injured civilian and two police officers who are lightly injured. I would again like to note the rapid response of the security forces and their deployment on this issue. We are now continuing to investigate the circumstances of the perpetrator and the circles close to him until we find the verdict together with the General Security Service.”
