Heavy police presence and military guards were spotted outside the Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil after at least 68 prisoners had been killed and dozens more wounded during massive clashes reported between rival gangs on Saturday.

Relatives and friends of the inmates gathered outside, waiting to receive updates on their loved ones, while military guards and police officers guarded the area.

“Now what? We have to stop this. Mister President, put your hand on your heart and help us. We are families suffering for our sons. Neither the police nor the army gives any information,” demanded Roberto Pineda, a relative of an inmate.

Just this year an estimated 300 prisoners have lost their lives in the prison system due to violent clashes between rival gangs. According to local reports, Ecuador penitentiary facilities are overcrowded by 55 percent.
