France: Hundreds attend Kurdish march in Strasbourg for PKK leader's release

Hundreds of people from the Kurdish community marched in Strasbourg on Saturday to demand the release of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Protesters were seen waving Kurdish flags and holding banners with Ocalan’s face on them.

The protest began around 11:30 GMT (12:30 local time) as an event part of the ‘Long March,’ which started on February 6 in Frankfurt and ended on February 11 in Saarbrucken.

Ocalan was seized in Kenya and taken back to Turkey in 1999, where he was tried and sentenced to death for treason and sedition. The sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment when Turkey abolished the death penalty. He has been held in isolation on the prison island of Imrali, receiving only a handful of visits since 2011.
