France: Tensions in Lille as protest against Eric Zemmour turns violent

Tensions were high in Lille on Saturday, as hundreds gathered to demonstrate against a campaign rally of far-right presidential candidate Eric Zemmour.

At least one protester chose to launch fireworks at police, with the authorities later responding with the deployment of tear gas.

The protest has been called for by anti-racism activists and was promoted by Mayor of Lille Martine Aubry.

A number of previous events organised by Zemmour have resulted in violence between his supporters and opponents.
