Several Union members, some belonging to the Federation SUD Commerces et Services Union, gathered in support of a dismissed Amazon employee outside the Industrial Tribunal offices in Lyon on Monday.

Jeremy Paglia, a former Amazon employee, was dismissed from his post in May 2021 and appealed to the labour courts against the decision. Paglia was let go after posting some critical messages of Amazon’s working conditions on an internal messaging board. The trial began on Monday and is expected to take several months.

Paglia was present at the rally and explained the events that led to his dismissal.

“They reproach me for the messages I had left in the internal messaging system, saying that I was complaining about the working conditions and the salaries. And that’s it,” said the former Amazon employee.

“I have understood that the Amazon system works this way: if you talk too much, they push you towards the door. Even the managers have to be careful not to talk too much, either,” said Paglia.
Amazon France has denied accusations over its alleged limits to freedom of expression.

SOT, Jeremy Paglia, Former Amazon Saint-Priest worker (French): “In 2021, I had a preliminary interview (with the Human Resources) and two weeks later it was over.”

SOT, Jeremy Paglia, Former Amazon Saint-Priest worker (French): “I have understood that this the Amazon system works this way: if you talk too much they push you towards the door. Even the managers have to be careful not to talk too much, either.”

M/S Protester speaking into megaphone *UPSOUND* (French): “Beyond the case of Jeremy, it’s about the management of Amazon, which is terrible. The staff is under constant pressure, the working conditions are really difficult and Jeremy was sacked in a rather brutal way.”

SOT, Didier Goncalves, Representative of Union SUD Commerces et Services branch (French): “Beyond the support to our colleague, Jeremy Paglia, who was abruptly sacked by Amazon in 2021, when the previous year in 2020 he had been chosen as the employee of the year and whose professional skills were widely recognized; we are here to denounce the ongoing methods at Amazon and, in particular, the recording against his will of the SUD union delegate. He was recorded ( an audio record ) when he was alerting the workers, in the exercise of his union duties, about a tactic by Amazon consisting in asking the workers to fill certificates against their own colleagues to make sackings easier.”
