Gaza Hospital ‘Under Siege’ as Israel Continues Ground Assault

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has released footage of increasingly intense urban combat as there are reports that Gaza’s largest hospital is effectively ‘under-siege’.

Thousands of civilians are sheltering inside al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. But there are reports that it’s now at the centre of an intense battle between the IDF and Hamas militants.

It has also been alleged that the hospital was hit by an Israeli airstrike, but this has not been independently verified.

Medical staff in the hospital claim snipers and drones are preventing anyone from leaving, and the hospital has now run out of essential medical supplies and fuel.

The IDF acknowledged that there is ‘intense fighting’ near al-Shifa hospital, but says it will not comment further on the military operation.

Israel maintains that its military forces adhere to international law, and do not target civilians.

The IDF has previously said it believes there is a Hamas command centre underneath al-Shifa hospital, a claim Hamas denies.

During a UN Security Council session on Friday, the Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) said Gaza’s medical system was ‘on its knees’.
