Georgia: Saakashvili starts eating after 1.5 months of hunger strike

The head of governmental council of physicians Nino Sharashenidze on Saturday said that the former president of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili started to eat after one and a half months of hunger strike.

Sharashenidze added that Saakashvili is experiencing “certain health problems” and will have to follow the strict scheme of meals after the hunger strike is over.

Saakashvili’s friend and United National Movement party member Georgy Chaladze said that the treatment plan will be approved after certain examinations are completed. He added that Georgian ex-president “listens to council is following their advice.”

“He always stressed that he respects those professionals in the council but he is against politically motivated decisions which do not correspond with council’s decisions,” Chaladze said.

Saakashvili was detained on 1 October and given a prison sentence over a conviction in absentia for abuse of office.

While in jail, Saakashvili has gone on hunger strike, describing himself as a political prisoner.

We should understand that 50 days of the hunger strike affected his health very badly. Today he [Mikhail Saakashvili] talked to the council of physicians formed by the Government of Georgia. At the present moment, he trusts the council members. He always stressed that he respects those professionals in the council but he is against politically motivated decisions which do not correspond with council’s decisions.”

It will remain that way until we have a plan of further action from the government. We hope that the recovery process will end as soon as possible, and we would like him to return healthy and full of energy. He [Mikhail Saakashvili] is the main factor that affects both Georgia and Ukraine. He is a Ukrainian politician and the third president of Georgia. He loves both the people of Ukraine and the people of Georgia. So our nations need to keep together and fight for his [Mikhail Saakashvili’s] health and rights.”
