Supporters of Georgian ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili gathered outside the courthouse where the politician’s case was being heard in Tbilisi on Friday.

Demonstrators chanted slogans in support of the ex-president, waved Georgian flags, and demanded authorities to free Saakashvili. Later, supporters marched through the streets of the city with posters and portraits of the politician.

Tbilisi Court held a meeting on Friday on the case of Saakashvili’s illegal crossing of the state border. During the trial, the former Georgian leader made a speech, after which he left the courtroom.

Mikheil Saakashvili was detained on October 1 upon his return to Georgia. Earlier, the ex-president was put on the national wanted list in cases of membership in the club of the banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valeria Gelashvili, according to the terms, he was sentenced in absentia to three and six years of freedom, respectively.

Saakashvili is also accused of seizing the state border and brutally dispersing the protesters.

In jail, the ex-president went on a hunger strike, calling himself a political prisoner. Supporters of Saakashvili continue to collect signatures under a petition addressed to the President of Georgia and the Georgian government claim to release the former leader of the state.
