Georgia: Tbilisi court holds hearing in former president Saakashvili case

Tbilisi City Court heard Mikheil Saakashvili’s case for the dispersal of protesters on November 7, 2007.

It was the first hearing in which a politician was allowed to attend.

Saakashvili was brought to the courtroom from the Gori military hospital, where he had been moved to after seven weeks of hunger strike.

After the politician was brought into the courtroom the defence played the Georgian anthem and asked for silence. Saakashvili’s supporters and the ex-president stood up and started singing. Despite the judges’ protest, the singing did not stop.

Saakashvili spent more than an hour explaining to the judges the reason for violently dispersing the protesters, after which he was taken to a military hospital in an ambulance.

Saakashvili was detained on October 1 upon his return to Georgia and given a prison sentence over a conviction in absentia for abuse of office. While in jail, Saakashvili went on hunger strike, describing himself as a political prisoner.

Supporters of the ex-president have collected signatures for a petition addressed to the president and the government of Georgia demanding the release of the former head of state.
