Tbilisi City Court heard the case of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili for embezzlement of state funds on Thursday.

During the hearing, the ex-President pointed out that “Georgia as a country is disappearing from the world map” due to the current political system.

“First of all, we must negotiate that we must have a broad public debate so that Georgia has a future and a perspective. This is impossible, this system cannot last,” Saakashvili said.

The former President also noted that “there should be full decentralization in Georgia”. He called for electronic elections in the country and also spoke out against the idea of banning gambling advertisements.

During the proceedings, Saakashvili’s supporters, with flags and posters, watched the court hearing broadcast on a screen set up outside.

Saakashvili was detained on 1 October. He had previously been placed on the domestic wanted list for the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili, for which he was sentenced in absentia to three and six years’ imprisonment respectively.

Saakashvili is also accused of illegally crossing the state border and violently dispersing protesters.

While in jail, Saakashvili went on hunger strike, describing himself as a political prisoner.

SOT, Mikheil Saakashvili, Former president of Georgia (Georgian): “First of all, we must negotiate that we must have a broad public debate, so that Georgia has a future and a perspective. This is impossible, this system cannot last. Georgia as a country is disappearing from the world map.”

SOT, Mikheil Saakashvili, Former president of Georgia (Georgian): “There should be electronic elections in Georgia, there should be a media code in Georgia in case the advertising conditions [banning online casino advertising] worsen as it is happening now to kill the independent media. Suddenly they all together decided they do not want to gamble. This is a bluff because they came into the gambling business on their own. And the rest will just become shadow business. I have seen this in Ukraine and I know what it looks like. But let’s say they passed this [law banning advertising of] gambling business. They should automatically restore the damage incurred by independent media to the last penny. I am absolutely sure about that. There should be full decentralisation in Georgia. The police must be municipal.”
