Germany: Bavarian Health Minister sounds alarm on Omicron amid "dramatic situation" in ICUs

Bavarian state minister for health Klaus Holetschek expressed ‘great concern’ about the new COVID variant Omicron as he briefed the reporters in Munich on Monday.
“I can only say for the moment that the situation in the intensive care units is dramatic. It is a dramatic situation as this wave in terms of incidents is rising,” said Klaus Holetschek as the Bavarian state remains one of worst-hit German states in the fourth wave of the COVID pandemic in Germany.
The new Omicron coronavirus variant is continuing to spread across the world. First discovered in South Africa, the variant has now been detected in a number of countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

SOT, Klaus Holetschek, Bavarian state minister for health (German): “The new mutation also fills us with great concern, but I think we have once again figured it out together that we now quickly need data on the question of how Omicron works, what impact it has and what we can do about it, including the question regarding the vaccines and other questions, science now has to answer.”

SOT, Klaus Holetschek, Bavarian state minister for health (German): “We are in an emergency and it would make sense that we have the full tool kit available and that we determine this epidemic emergency again.”

SOT, Klaus Holetschek, Bavarian state minister for health (German): “We all agreed that the immediate issue is to observe the situation very closely, especially when Omicron is here, and we also took note today that there will probably be a federal and state meeting tomorrow at short notice and we will have also taken note of new developments, which now are also being described in papers. Today there was a publication by well-known scientists, including Professor Protzer and others. It’s about emergency switches and various things. And I assume that all of this will be discussed again tomorrow at that meeting and that we will then discuss it again as soon as possible.”

SOT, Klaus Holetschek, Bavarian state minister for health (German): “Of course, the measures always have to be proportionate, but I can only say for the moment that the situation in the intensive care units is dramatic. It is a dramatic situation as this wave in terms of incidents is rising. And that is why I believe it is right and necessary to weigh up the protection of people and focus accordingly.”

SOT, Klaus Holetschek, Bavarian state minister for health (German): “I think it’s up to all of us to break this wave with measures that we have already taken in Bavaria. For example, very stringent in the hotspot areas, but also elsewhere. If we manage to break this wave, then we will also be able to relieve and relax the situation in the hospitals in the aftermath. That does not mean that we are through with it then, but we have to remain careful because we know that the vaccination mandate is not there yet, the people have not yet been vaccinated. And then we have to be careful again that the wave does not rise again and Omicron is a great unknown that harbours certain dangers and if you imagine taking another wave with you in the middle of an ascending wave, then that would be a scenario that I don’t really want to imagine.”

SOT, Klaus Holetschek, Bavarian state minister for health (German): “So caution is the order of the day when it comes to Omicron, as long as we aren’t certain about the courses of the disease, or the active ingredient of the vaccine. And so we strongly agreed on this question.”
