Germany: Berlin activists demand abolition of EU agency Frontex

Hundreds of activists marched through the streets of Berlin on Saturday, to demand the abolition of the European Union border and coast guard agency Frontex.

Demonstrators could be see marching with pro-refugee and anti-border banners and signs.
“The way they are treating people at the European border is just inhumane and there are a lot of human rights abuses happening right now, especially at the Polish-Belarus border as you know, so that’s why I am here, to stand up against that” shared protester Julie.

Frontex has been accused of aiding the Libyan coastguard in retrieving refugees who seek to reach Europe via the treacherous Mediterranean route. Refugees who are picked up by Libya are returned to detention camps that often violate human rights.

The European Parliament has also criticised the agency for assisting pushbacks on the Greek islands, resulting in several internal investigations.

SOT, Pauline, Protest organiser, “Frontex is the agency for the EU border and coast guard and they are directly involved in illegal pushbacks and human rights violation at the EU external border and it is an agency which is also hiding their involvement in these pushbacks.”

SOT, Pauline, Protest organiser: “​And we don’t think that any reform is going to make Frontex better because it’s on their mandate that they have to protect the borders and that involved pushing people back and restricting access to protection and that is why we are calling to abolish this agency.”
