The German Federal Bureau of Investigation (BND) admitted weaknesses in the assessment of the situation in Afghanistan before the Taliban came to power at the fifth hearing of the German security forces in the German Bundestag in Berlin on Wednesday.

“With regard to the surprisingly rapid change of power in Afghanistan, the BND (Bureau of Investigation) has identified weaknesses in the prediction. We are currently in the process of developing possible solutions and, for example, further improving our scenario analyses” said Head of BND, Dr Bruno Kahl.

Like the other intelligence services, the BND did not expect the Taliban to take power so quickly, he added.

The head of the Military counterintelligence (MAD), Martina Rosenberg, and Head of the Federal Agency for State Protection, Thomas Haldenzwang, also spoke at the hearing at Paul-Loebe-Haus.

Both revealed in their statements that with regard to the security situation in Germany, the greatest threat is still right-wing extremism.

“I carry it in front of me like a mantra: the greatest threat to security and democracy in Germany continues to come from right-wing extremism,” said Haldenzwang.

At the annual hearing of the security forces, the heads of the security services each give a report on the state of internal and external security in Germany.
