German Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz and climate activists commented on the results of their meeting at the headquarters of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin on Friday. The meeting came after the climate activists held a hunger strike for weeks before the elections.

“We are in different realities. You can not negotiate with physics. The government measures are make-up and we are issuing an ultimatum that by the end of the year the rampant food waste must come to an end and be used in a good way and promise that in the first 100 days of the new government law is presented to turn industrial agriculture into a climate-friendly by 2030,” said one of the activists Henning Jeschke.

Scholz in turn said that the conversation was ‘good’ before leaving the venue.

SOT, Lea Bonasera, Activist from ‘Letzte Generation’ (‘Last Generation’): “He does not recognise how bad the situation is. We can no longer manage the 1.5 degrees and when we reach this point in 3-4 years the climate will be unchangeable. This is something he does not see and he does not recognise how fast we need to react on this. We are the last generation and we went to this conversation to be honest about how bad the climate change is. We must now draw the consequences for ourselves if the next chancellor of Germany is not capable of assuring food for the population.”

SOT, Lars Werner, Activist (German): “Facing this situation to be satisfied is quite difficult. I think we are in front of the abyss already and this is a fight for survival. I’m not satisfied with it.”
