Several activists in Berlin announced a continuation of their hunger strike from Saturday morning, calling it a ‘dry’ strike - as its participants will refuse to drink, in the heart of the German capital on Thursday. They also put ice blocks on empty chairs prepared for chancellor candidates who hadn’t met with the activists before the deadline.
On his 25th day without food Henning Jeschke, one of seven people who went on a hunger strike, and Lea Jeschke, who joined the hunger strike four days ago, symbolically presented their demands to three blocks of ice on chairs reserved for the candidates for chancellor Armin Laschet, Olaf Scholz, and Annalena Baerbock, who did not accept an invitation to talk with them about global warming before the elections.
During their speeches, the activists demanded more measures to fight climate change, denouncing the use of fracking for liquified natural gas.

TRANSLATIONS:

SOT, Lea Bonasera, Climate activist (German): “I have co-organised this hunger strike from the beginning and have also been on hunger strike myself for four days, so I have not eaten anything for four days and will go on dry strike together with Henning. As Annalena Baerbock or Olaf Scholz and Armin Laschet are not here, we have put ice blocks on their chairs. The ice blocks stand for their ice-cold ignorance towards us in the last weeks. And in order to be able to really feel this ice-cold ignorance, we will be silent for three minutes.”

SOT, Henning Jeschke, Climate activist (German): “I think the whole young generation has just felt this ignorance. I am Henning Jeschke, I am 21 years old, now on the 25th day have eaten no with the simple demand that we get into the conversation here - and maybe they call there directly. No one showed up, but we can see they are well replaced.”

SOT, Climate activist: “One of the biggest importers of fat gas in the United Kingdom, the biggest of the United Kingdom, one of the biggest in the world is called National Grid. They are fracking in the United States, they are making a terminal in New York in the heart of New York in Brooklyn to export LNG (liquified natural gas) to Europe and importing it in the UK. They are sponsoring COP and if you go to their website they present themselves as champions of the climate transition with LNG.”

SOT, Lea Bonasera, Climate activist (German): “All you have to do to get rid of and stop climate activists is to ignore them, which is why we are going on a dry hunger strike on Saturday morning. I am now going to read you the words and the adjusted demand that this dry strike brings.”
