The two top candidates of the Left Party, Janine Wissler and Dietmar Bartsch presented an immediate programme to tackle the most immediate concerns in Germany ahead of the federal elections at a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

“Today, the Left proposes an immediate programme, i.e. measures that can be implemented quickly and that improve people’s lives and initiate socio-economic restructuring,” Wissler stated.

According to Janine Wissler, the main points were the protection against rising rents, a peaceful foreign policy, climate change, the gap between rich and poor and a minimum wage of 13 euros per hour.

“Germany should be the disarmament world champion and that is why we want the arms budget to stop rising,” stated Dietmar Bartsch.

Dietmar Bartsch focused on the difference in salaries and pensions between the old and new federal states. In the Federal Republic of Germany, there is a pay gap of about 20% between the eastern and western states.

One is the immediate increase of the statutory minimum wage, where we propose 13 euros. About eight to nine million workers would benefit from such an increase in the statutory minimum wage. We want to abolish fixed-term contracts. By the way, this is already in the coalition agreement, but it has not been implemented. We want to abolish this in order to guarantee secure employment and we want to strengthen collective agreements.”

SOT, Janine Wissler, Candidate for The Left party (German): “We have to achieve the climate protection goals and that is why we say we have to reduce the environmentally harmful subsidies, we need massive investments in rail transport, in local public transport, we want to make Germany a rail country, shift domestic flights to rail. We urgently need to take action here so that we can make progress with the energy transition and achieve the climate goals.”

SOT, Dietmar Bartsch, Candidate for The Left party (German): “One point I would like to add is the topic of armaments. We have now had a development, also in the pandemic, in which the budget has continued to rise, in some cases immeasurably. According to NATO criteria, we now have over 50 billion. We on the Left say quite clearly that this is the wrong way to go. We want disarmament everywhere in the world. Germany should be the disarmament world champion and that is why we want the arms budget to stop rising. That is why we do not want the 2% target. Explicitly not, because this money is urgently needed for other things, to invest in education.”

SOT, Dietmar Bartsch, Candidate for The Left party (German): “We say quite clearly that 100 percent unity [east/west pay gap] must be the goal in the next legislative period. The course must be set at the beginning. This includes that we want wages to be equalised for the same work performance by the end of the legislative period, but this must be tackled immediately. We also want pensions to be equalised next year, finally. Chancellor Merkel made a promise in 2005. It should happen in the next legislative period. This should and will be implemented with us in any case.”
