Germany: Govt endorses Belarus travel ban for Iraqi, Syrian and Yemeni nationals - FM spox

The German government endorses the ban on Iraqi, Syrian and Yemenite nationals traveling by plane from Turkey to Belarus, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson Andrea Sasse said during a presser in Berlin on Friday.

The ban, which will not apply to diplomatic passport holders, was described by Interior Ministry spokesperson Steve Alter as being “a measure, which we expect to be quite effective”.

Belarusian airline Belavia confirmed that Turkish authorities had banned nationals of Syria, Iraq and Yemen from boarding flights to Belarus due to the ongoing migrant crisis at the border with Poland.

Regarding the closing of the Memorial Society in the Russian Federation, an organisation dedicated to teaching about political repression, Sasse said the move “should concern everyone when we know their work for decades in favour of human rights and against political tyranny through courageous and tireless work for the citizens of Russia.”

She further added that the Russian justice system “must comply with the law to protect the right for the citizens to freely come together in organisations.”

The group announced on Thursday that the Russian Public Prosecutor’s Office asked the Supreme Court to move forward with the dissolution of the human rights organisation, the oldest in Russia.
